Aftershock - Chile

On February 27, 2010, Chile was struck by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake, killing hundreds and causing extensive damage to buildings and flooding from tsunami waves.

  • A lone individual is seen walking in a wide-angle shot showing a badly littered beachfront; a house sits in the sea.
  • A Chilean flag is pictured in the foreground against a backdrop of damaged homes.
  • A tall building - cracked in the middle - lays on its side. Pedestrians are shown in the foreground looking at the structure from across the street.
  • A man holding a broken bathroom fixture is seen walking inside his damaged house; in the foreground a water line reveals that the water reached near the ceiling.
  • Rubble clutters the foreground as a line of people are shown waiting to fill containers with water.
  • An old man prys open a soda bottle he retrieved from a badly damaged store (visible just behind him).
  • A policeman carrying a shotgun walks, towards the camera, down a heavily damaged street.
  • At a gas station a standing armed soldier looks down an underground gas tank, while another soldier detains several men accused of siphoning gas.
  • A policeman holding a shotgun turns around to look at a Chilean woman standing across the street.
  • A family of three (two young women and an older one) are seen standing outside over a large bag; two tents and a Chilean flag are visible.
  • In a tightly framed crowd shot, Chilean president Michelle Bachelet stands in the middle speaking to a resident whose back is to the camera.
  • A middle-aged woman and man stand in a large room (used as a donation center) examining clothing; piles of clothes are on several wood tables.
  • A massive crack in the ground is visible as several people walk carrying bags filled with supplies.
  • A 65-year old man, with long grey hair and wearing shorts, collects wood from a beach clutter with debris from a tsunami.
  • Two young women, standing outside, examine the collapsed roof of their house as it sits on an exposed mattress they want to recover.
  • An armed soldier standing on a beach, littered with remnants from destroyed houses, guards a large metal container in a roped off area.
  • A young woman, in the foreground of a debris-filled landscape, walks pass an overturned car.
  • The blurred image of a young man is shown as he walks pass a heavily damaged house and its debris-filled front yard.
